CHAPTER ELEVEN

JORDAN LAY IN his bed, staring at the ceiling. Sleep evaded him.

He was troubled after hearing Delaney talk about success. About how Carters had to be “better“.

It shouldn’t surprise him. His dad had warned him about Carters all his life. He’d thought Delaney was different back in high school, and then she’d dropped him after what her brother had said to her. He’d been hurt she hadn’t even tried to talk to him. He hadn’t known then that his father had talked to her. Or more likely at her. But now he felt sure that without Nelson, or his dad, they still wouldn’t have made it. He didn’t meet the Carter’s standards for success.

What had he thought? That since he and Delaney were spending time together, maybe she’d be interested in him again, now that that high school misunderstanding was cleared up? Not a chance. Maybe, back in high school, maybe then she’d have been willing to settle for someone like him. He’d never know for sure. But not now, not when her idea of success would frame a panic attack as a failure.

It wasn’t just that he didn’t fit her vision of success, he didn’t want to. His father had spent his life trying to find that path and it had cost too much for Jordan and his mother. Maybe even his father. Jordan didn’t know if the man had ever been happy.

Was Jordan?

He was content. Something his father had never learned to be. And if the choice was contentment or a life of vain searching for some peak of success to make him happy, he’d stay with content.

He would, but Delaney wouldn’t. After what she’d said today, he knew she’d find some way to deal with her panic attacks and get back on her success track.

For him, success would mean owning the farm Coming home from working in the fields to someone who shared the same goal. That would never be Delaney. He just had to get through this next short period without thinking she was interested in more than she was.

In more than he was.

He punched his pillow and rolled over.
